The RBP-ReguNet project is pleased to announce its upcoming Open International Mini Symposium, entitled “RNA Control of Gene Expression: From Molecules to Disease”.
The symposium will take place on 8 October 2026, from 09:45 to 13:45, at the Sala Ramon y Cajal of the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) in Barcelona. The event is organised by researchers Fátima Gebauer and Juan Valcárcel from the CRG and Ashwin Woodhoo from the University of Santiago de Compostela and is open to the scientific community.
Exploring RNA regulation from molecules to disease
RNA-binding proteins and other RNA regulatory factors control gene expression at multiple levels, including RNA processing, modification, localisation, stability and translation. These regulatory mechanisms are essential for normal cellular function, while their disruption can contribute to cancer and other diseases.
The symposium will examine these processes from complementary perspectives, bringing together internationally recognised experts in RNA biology, gene regulation, translational control and disease mechanisms.
Keynote programme
The programme will include four keynote presentations:
-
Jernej Ule, The Francis Crick Institute and University College London
“PRMT activity promotes global 3′ UTR shortening in proliferating cells” -
Anne Willis, MRC Cambridge
“Translational control: The Cancer connection” -
Eva Novoa, Centre for Genomic Regulation, Barcelona
“Decoding the epitranscriptome at single molecule resolution” -
Raúl Méndez, Institute for Research in Biomedicine, Barcelona
“Cytoplasmic RNBP assemblies as a potential therapeutic target”
The presentations will address how RNA regulation changes during cell proliferation, how translational control is connected to cancer, how RNA modifications can be studied at single-molecule resolution, and how cytoplasmic RNA-binding protein assemblies could provide new therapeutic opportunities.
A discussion led by the next generation of researchers
The symposium will also include a round-table discussion moderated by the MSCA-DN RBP-ReguNet Doctoral Candidates. This session will provide an opportunity to discuss the main themes of the symposium, exchange perspectives across different areas of RNA research and encourage dialogue between established scientists and early-career researchers.
The event reflects RBP-ReguNet’s commitment to promoting scientific exchange, international collaboration and advanced doctoral training in RNA–RBP regulatory networks.
